Majestic Velebit Mountain

Today, we’ll explore one of the best hiking areas in Croatia: the karst formations of Rožanski and Hadućki kukovi. These rocky peaks, reaching up to 200 meters high, create an endless, breathtaking landscape of unique and bizarre shapes. Located in the heart of the national park, this region is a strictly protected nature reserve, representing the highest level of conservation in the country.

Despite its rugged and seemingly inhospitable environment, a trail was expertly carved through the Rožanski kukovi in the 1930s by engineer Ante Premužić, a passionate lover of Velebit. The Premužić Trail is widely regarded as Croatia’s most beautiful hiking route, offering stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and islands. This trail is perfect for all levels, providing a safe passage along dramatic cliffs and precipitous abysses, making it a must-see for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

Distance: 15-20 km / 500-800 m uphil.

Overnight: Mountain home Zavizan.

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll embark on a 2-hour transfer to the central part of Velebit, Baške Ošterije, where the north and south Velebit meet. This area is considered the hub of mountain tourism and the starting point for most Velebit adventures.

Once we arrive, we’ll set off to explore the striking Dabarski Kukovi—a range of sharp, rocky peaks rising dramatically from the green woods of Dabar and grassy sinkholes. These peaks stretch parallel to the Adriatic coast, with vast karst valleys nestled below, including the famous “dabri” and “dulibe”—ancient Slavic names for deep, wooded valleys between towering cliffs.

Along the way, we’ll stop at the Dabarski Kukovi Mountain Lodge in Ravni Dabar for a well-deserved refreshment break before continuing our adventure.

After a 1-hour transfer, we’ll arrive at Paklenica National Park, a natural wonder designated as a national park in 1949. Known for its unique landscapes, dramatic gorges, and rugged peaks, Paklenica is a true gem of North Dalmatia. The park features two iconic gorges—Velika and Mala Paklenica—and the towering peaks of Vaganski (1752 m) and Sveto Brdo (1753 m), offering some of the best hiking in Croatia.

Our hike begins in the Velika Paklenica Canyon, famous for its untouched wilderness. You’ll have the chance to observe rock climbers tackling the Anica Wall, a 400-meter vertical cliff. As we pass the dramatic Anica Kuk, we’ll continue through peaceful forests, eventually reaching the Manita Pec Cave, renowned for its breathtaking stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones. Discovered in 1937, this cave has enchanted visitors for decades with its stunning speleothems.

After exploring the cave, we’ll make our way to Ramica Village, a charming abandoned settlement where our local hosts will greet us with warmth. To cap off this unforgettable day, we’ll enjoy a traditional “Peka” dinner, a meal prepared under hot coals, ensuring a perfect and authentic Croatian farewell meal.

Distance: 8-10 km / 300-500 m uphill.

Overnight: Ramica Mountain hut.

On our final day, we’ll embark on a spectacular climb to the highest peak of Velebit, Vaganski Peak. Starting from a decent altitude, we’ll hike light, leaving our heavy gear behind at the hut. For those who prefer a more relaxed day, you can enjoy a free morning to unwind and soak in the surrounding nature at the hut.

Once we reach Vaganski Peak, we’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. After some time to take in the stunning scenery and rest, we’ll descend through the oak and pine forests, ensuring a pleasant and scenic return to the hut.

After our reunion at the hut, we’ll head towards Velika Paklenica Canyon, where our incredible 5-day adventure will conclude. To wrap up the journey, we’ll stop at the legendary Zvonko Mountaineering Bar for a celebratory beer, sharing stories and memories from an unforgettable adventure.
