Fogo Hiking Holiday: Volcanoes, Vines and Views

You will be picked up from your accommodation in Chã das Caldeiras and will walk with your guide to the base of the Volcano. Here, you can admire the impressive view of its active volcanic cone, which last erupted in 2014. The landscape around the volcano is a striking contrast of deep black lava and vibrant green vegetation. The tour will take you through areas with fig, vine, apple, and pear trees, as well as mustard plants.

As you begin your ascent, your local guide will adjust the climbing pace to match your abilities. After approximately three hours, you'll reach Cape Verde's highest peak. From Pico do Fogo, the third tallest mountain in the Atlantic Ocean at 2,829 meters, you'll experience one of the most dramatic volcanic cones in the world. Following this, enjoy a well-deserved picnic while taking in breathtaking 360-degree views of the entire island of Fogo, and then we'll go on an exciting exploration of the crater, where you can feel as if you're touching the sky above the clouds.

Afterward, you’ll descend a steep ash slope for about half an hour, immersing yourself in Lapilli—a truly unforgettable experience.

Once you've completed one of the top activities in Cape Verde, the tour concludes with your return to your accommodation in Chã das Caldeiras.

Departing from Portela village, you'll follow a marked trail that meanders through scattered fruit trees and vines as you gradually ascend. Continue your journey over the quiet lapilli, which dampens sound and life, until you reach the 1995 peak. From there, make a brief climb to gaze into the vibrant, smoking crater formed in 2014. Hike up the steep yet short path to the 1995 summit, then ascend a bit higher to the new craters from 2014. Navigate areas where lava has disrupted the cobblestone path and enjoy a well-deserved picnic break.

Afterward, retrace your steps back down, which will take approximately 45 minutes to reach your hotel. The tour wraps up with a drop-off at your accommodation.

Following check-out, visit a nearby coffee plantation and, at your own expense, taste one of the finest wines in the world. Enjoy lunch in a local setting before heading to the village of Forno, concluding your exploration with a drop-off back at your accommodation in São Filipe.
