While working at a hotel on Santiago Island, I noticed that many guests sought unique local experiences. With over a decade in event planning, I began introducing clients to my family and my mother’s traditional Cuscuz. This simple idea led to the co-founding of our travel company, now a leader in custom holidays and tours in Cape Verde. We aim to provide exceptional experiences with a focus on social and environmental responsibility, fostering rural tourism and supporting local economies.

Route details

After being picked up from your lodging in Praia, you will head towards the lush volcanic valley of Calabaceira. Begin your hike along a straightforward and accessible trail suitable for all hikers, and discover the renowned giant baobab tree that Charles Darwin noted during his visit to the island. Engage with local farmers tending to their fields of sugar cane, mangoes, cassava, bananas, and more.

Your hike will continue to Cidade Velha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you'll explore the São Francisco Convent, Banana Street, the historic slave market at Pillory, and the Royal Fortress of São Filipe. You'll learn about the history of transatlantic slavery and the pirate raids that plagued the city.

The São Francisco Convent was established in the mid-17th century as a site for worship and education. Banana Street was the first urban street developed by the Portuguese in sub-Saharan Africa. The Pelourinho, constructed in 1512 from white marble, served as a slave market. Visit the ruins of the Sé Catedral, the first cathedral built in Africa by the Portuguese. The Fortaleza Real de São Filipe was erected in 1587 to protect the city from pirate attacks. From its vantage point, enjoy stunning views of the old town and learn about the defense strategies employed against pirates.

The tour will conclude with a return to your accommodation in Praia.
