Turquoise water glimmers beneath your floatplane as the South Chilcotin Mountains unfold in waves of peaks, ridgelines, and valleys stretching to the horizon. The adventure begins the moment you land at Lorna Lake, a remote alpine jewel that feels worlds away from civilization. From here, every turn of the pedals takes you deeper into a landscape that is raw, vast, and alive with history.

Over three days, you’ll follow singletrack that winds past volcanic slopes, wildflower meadows, and glacial creeks. Ride through Graveyard Valley, once the site of ancient battles, crest Elbow Pass high in the alpine, and descend on flowing trails that drop hundreds of meters into the forested valleys below. Each climb and creek crossing is rewarded with stunning views, and at Spruce Lake you’ll find quiet moments of wilderness—rowboats on the water, fossil-strewn slopes, and mountain silence.

Nights are spent in historic backcountry camps, where hearty meals and simple comforts revive you for the next ride. Day 1
From Lorna’s Turquoise Waters to Bear Paw Camp

Begin your adventure with a surreal floatplane flight over the South Chilcotins, landing on the turquoise jewel of Lorna Lake, surrounded by towering peaks. After unloading and gearing up, ride along Big Creek Trail through valleys framed by volcanic ridges, forest, and meadows. Cross creeks by scrambling over makeshift log bridges, and enter the wide and historic Graveyard Valley, once the battleground of the St’at’imc and Tsilhqot’in peoples. As the valley narrows, push and pedal up 300 m to Elbow Pass before a thrilling 550 m descent into Tyaughton Creek and Bear Paw Camp, where you’ll relax for the night.

Bear Paw Camps is a fully hosted and catered to help take the heavy lifting out of your backcountry adventure within the South Chilcotin Mountains Provincial Park. Along our main trail routes, these are our most frequented and popular camps that can sleep up to 10 people. With meals, cozy canvas tents and expedition sleeping bags, warm showers and games, these camps provide creature comforts on your grand adventure.

Bear Paw Camp

Backcountry Camp Inclusions:

  • A camp host to greet you and maintain camp.
  • A cozy bed in a dual occupancy canvas walled tent (2 people per tent typically).
  • Three meals a day when in the mountains.
  • Filtered water to fill your hydration packs and bottles.
  • Sleeping bags, sleeping pad/mattresses, and pillows.
  • Fleece jackets to help keep you warm in the evenings.
  • Crocs footwear to wear while in and around camp.
  • Outdoor hot showers with soap.
  • An outdoor pit toilet that is basic in nature but fully stocked.
  • If ordered and paid for more then 30 days in advance – beer, wine and/or cider. It will be waiting for you at your desired camp location.
  • The opportunity to dry out wet clothes and/or shoes, with a wood fired stove (this means you can travel even lighter!).

It's important to know

Personal equipment you need for the tour

Essential items:

  • 25–35l backpack;
  • water bladder or water bottles (2–3l of water per day is typically required);
  • rain jacket;
  • packable puffy or warm layer;
  • neck warmer (buff), gloves, tuque if colder weather forecasted;
  • any typical trail side repair tools, spare tube, and any bike-specific parts (derailleur hangers, chain links, etc.);
  • headlamp;
  • sleeping bag liner;
  • pillowcase;
  • small camp towel (hot shower available);
  • personal toiletries (soap and shampoo is provided);
  • camp clothes;
  • bear spray and know how to use it (1 between 2 people is recommended);
  • we recommend that you bring your own bear spray, but there is bear spray for purchase at our tyax
  • adventures check-in desk;
  • personal medications.

Pro tips:

  • pack travel-sized toothpaste, sunscreen, etc. (not full-size);
  • wash clothes in nearby creeks and dry out overnight by the wood-fired stoves;
  • wear the next day’s riding clothes in camp the night prior;
  • fill from streams/creeks if you do not wish to carry a lot of water;
  • strapping spare tubes and pumps to the bike and having small frame/top tube bags helps reduce
  • backpack weight;
  • double check what is included in camp to not pack duplicates.

Optional items (if space and weight permits):

  • camera/phone for taking pictures;
  • personal charging device for phone/camera;
  • travel-sized personal sunscreen and/or bug spray if necessary;
  • a change of riding clothes as you deem necessary;
  • water filter;
  • hydration tablets and/or energy gels.

    Wow! The 3 day hiking trip was an incredible experience and one I will never forget. We had a beautiful flight into Lorna Lake where we started are trek towards Bear Paw Camp. We crossed creeks, climbed steeps, had stunning alpine views, and then got warmly welcomed into camp with freshly baked cookies, charcuterie and slippers (thanks Peter!). Day two brought rain and river crossings as we followed the valley but it was all part of the fun and ahead of us waited Spruce Camp where we could dry out our gear in front of the fire. Once again, the camp host (shoutout to Gil) greeted us with delicious Apres and dinner, and homemade ice cream! Day three was the big one and WOW. The scenery blew my breath away as we crossed Windy and Camel pass. I cannot recommend hiking in the South Chilcotin more and using Tyax Adventures to guide/host. Beth was incredibly helpful with reservations and Bobbi guided us through a safe and exciting adventure. I can’t wait to come back! In total, we did 52km across the three days.

    I recently completed a multi-day backpacking tour, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. Our adventure began with a safe and comfortable flight to Lorna Lake, followed by a cold dip, setting the tone for what would be an incredible journey. As we made our way through the stunning wilderness of the South Chilcotin Mountains Provincial Park, we stopped at Bear Paw Camp and Spruce Camp to rest and recharge. At each location, we were greeted by incredibly friendly hosts who went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. After long days of hiking, the hearty and delicious meals they prepared were exactly what we needed. Exploring the park on foot, as opposed to a mountain bike trip, offered a completely different perspective. It allowed me to slow down, truly take in the breathtaking scenery, and connect with the natural beauty of the area. The opportunity to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, be present in the moment, and share this experience with wonderful people was priceless. I can’t wait to be back for another adventure. Highly recommended!

    Just wrapped up an unforgettable hiking trip! Started with a flight to Lorna Lake, a quick dip (Brrrrr!), and then we were off hiking through the stunning South Chilcotin Mountains. The camps were cozy and the hosts were awesome, BIG thanks Peter + Gill! The meals hit the spot after long days on the trail. You can even order beers to be waiting for you at camp!! I’m already looking forward to the next adventure. Highly recommend!
