The Southern Ocean feels less like a backdrop here and more like a constant presence — breathing, shifting, pulling you forward. This walk follows the edge of Australia where land slowly gives way to water, and every step carries the sense of space, wind, and time.

Over four days, the trail reveals the most dramatic stretches of the Fleurieu Peninsula. You walk from open coastal headlands to hidden coves, through dense native forest and along high cliffs where the ocean stretches uninterrupted to the horizon. Winter streams spill toward the sea, waterfalls flow year-round, and the Heysen Trail threads it all together — from Cape Jervis to the wild beaches of Deep Creek, Tunkalilla, and Newland Head. Kangaroos appear without warning, dolphins surface near quiet bays, and birdlife fills the air above the clifftops.

Each afternoon, the pace softens. With a welcoming homestead set deep inside Deep Creek Conservation Park, you return to comfort without packing up each day. Light day packs, short transfers, thoughtful guiding, and evenings spent watching wildlife from the balcony turn this journey into something both immersive and restorative. Join us for a coastal walk that stays with you long after the boots come off!

Route details

Day 1
Along the Southern Edge: Cape Jervis to Deep Creek

The walk begins at 8:30 a.m. at Cape Jervis, the official starting point of the famous Heysen Trail. The first section eases you in gently, following a rolling coastline toward Fisheries Beach and a string of quiet coves hidden along the shore. Seasonal streams spill into the Southern Ocean, which stays beside us for much of the day. From higher points, wide views open over Backstairs Passage, the narrow channel separating the mainland from Kangaroo Island, known for its strong tides.

As the trail approaches Deep Creek Conservation Park, open grasslands slowly give way to dense native forest. A memorable moment is the descent to Blow Hole Beach, its clear water glinting below, before a steady climb to Cobbler Hill. A short transfer then brings us to our Deep Creek accommodation, where pre-dinner drinks mark the end of the day.
