To ensure a smooth start to your adventure, we recommend arriving in Mendoza the day before the expedition, ideally in the morning. In the afternoon, our team will visit your accommodation to review equipment and discuss trip details.

Day 2
Transfer Mendoza – Portinari Refuge | Trekking to Scaravelli Refuge
Your expedition kicks off with an introductory meeting to connect with your fellow adventurers. From there, we’ll travel in a private vehicle to Manzano Histórico and follow a scenic dirt road to Refugio Portinari, home to the National Gendarmerie. Here, we’ll meet our skilled local muleteers who will accompany us on this extraordinary journey. Customs clearance and registration will also take place at this stop.
The trekking adventure begins with a 4-hour hike to Scaravelli Refuge at 3,200 meters, leading us deep into the breathtaking Andes. In the afternoon, we’ll set up camp, unwind by a crackling bonfire, and enjoy a hearty dinner under the starry mountain sky.

Day 3
Scaravelli – Portillo Argentino – Real de la Cruz Refuge
Today’s journey takes us to the Portillo Argentino Pass, the highest point of our trek at 4,380 meters above sea level. The challenging ascent is richly rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Andes and the Chilean border. From the summit, the trail descends into the Tunuyán River Valley, where we’ll arrive at Refugio Real de la Cruz (2,870 m), a historic mountain shelter owned by the Argentine Army. Frequently visited by adventurers and mountaineers, it offers a perfect resting spot for the night.
We’ll set up camp near the shelter, enjoy a revitalizing dinner, and sleep in tents under the serene mountain skies, recharging for the days ahead.

Day 4
Tunuyan River Valley | Laguna de los Patos Hike
On the third day, we take a well-deserved break to recharge. You can relax near the Real de la Cruz Refuge or join a short guided hike to explore the area’s natural wonders. Your guide will introduce you to the unique local flora and fauna and lead you to the serene Laguna de los Patos, a hidden gem in the Andes.
Enjoy a peaceful evening with a delicious dinner and another night under the stars in the comfort of your tent, ready for the adventure ahead.
Day 5
Real de la Cruz – El Caletón
After breakfast, we’ll gear up for an exciting Tunuyán River crossing. With the help of our strong horses and the expertise of our muleteers, we’ll safely navigate the river before continuing the trek. The trail leads to a stunning viewpoint of Mount Tupungato (6,570 meters) and follows the picturesque Palomares Stream to El Caletón, our final campsite in Argentine territory at 3,027 meters.
If the weather allows, unwind with a refreshing dip in a mineral-rich stream. As night falls, enjoy the warmth of a campfire and sleep under a mesmerizing star-filled sky, a perfect end to an unforgettable day.

Day 6
El Caletón – International border – Termas del Plomo, Chile | Transfer to Cajón del Maipo
The fifth day presents one of the expedition’s most exhilarating challenges as we make our way to the Piuquenes Pass (4,030 m), marking the border between Argentina and Chile. Here, Chilean horses, mules, and experienced muleteer guides will take over to lead us on the final descent into Chilean territory.
The trail winds down to the El Plomo River, and after crossing the Yeso River, we’ll find private vehicles ready to transport us to the picturesque Embalse del Yeso in San Gabriel, located in the stunning Cajón del Maipo region. At the Chilean Police station, we’ll complete customs formalities before heading to a cozy cabin complex.
The expedition concludes with a celebratory farewell dinner at a local restaurant, a perfect way to reflect on the incredible journey.

Will you pick us up from our accommodation?
Yes, we provide pick-up from accommodations in Mendoza city, Luján, or Maipú. Pick-ups from Valle de Uco are available, with an additional cost.
Can children participate in the hiking trip?
The hiking trip is recommended for adults and mature teenagers due to the challenging nature of the terrain and duration of the hike.
