Route details

Day 1
Banavie to Loch Lochy

The program description is subject to changes.

The journey begins in Banavie, just outside Fort William, where you meet the barge, settle into your cabin, and get your bike fitted before setting off along the opening stretches of the Caledonian Canal. The first day is a gentle introduction, following smooth towpaths and quiet waterside tracks as the canal leads you away from the coast and into the dramatic walls of the Great Glen.

You cycle north through a mix of forest trails and canal-side paths, gradually climbing as the landscape tightens between hills. The highlight is reaching Loch Lochy, where mountain reflections begin to dominate the water and the Highlands truly announce themselves. The barge meets you at the end of the ride, moored in a peaceful spot, and the evening is spent settling in, sharing the first meal together, and watching the light fade over the loch.

Tour provider's comments

The total biking distance is 70 miles, broken down into rides of up to 27 miles per day. The route is on a mix of tarmac, smooth towpaths and wide but uneven forest trails. Expect some reasonably large climbs (this is the Highlands after all!), with the highest point of the cycle being approximately 300m above the lochs.

Our Barge

The vessel for your journey has been offering successful cruises since 1996. Measuring 39 meters in length, it can accommodate 12 passengers along with six crew members. The barge features seven steep steps leading from the deck to the boat at both ends, equipped with sturdy handrails. The crew is experienced in assisting guests with these steps; however, the boat is not wheelchair accessible.

When anchored, a smaller RIB support boat is used for transportation to and from the shore, accessed via a short ladder leading up to the deck. Inside the boat, there is a single step at each end of the cabin passage, as well as additional steps leading up to the en-suite and shower facilities.

You will stay in a twin en-suite cabin featuring excellent power showers. As you journey through your exploration, your accommodation will shift to a new location each day. There are six en-suite cabins, each with a spacious lower berth measuring three feet and six inches and a standard upper berth of two feet and six inches.

All berths are six feet and three inches long, equipped with underfloor heating, heated towel rails, ample storage, and large opening windows. Bed linens and towels are supplied, and there is an abundance of hot water with powerful showers available. Additionally, there is a laundry/drying room on board; please inform the crew if you wish to use the washing machine.
