Glaciers to Gorillas: The Ultimate Uganda–Rwanda Journey

Following an early morning breakfast, you will be transported to the Kanyanchu Visitors Centre. There, you will meet an experienced ranger guide who will take you on a hike through the forest in search of a family of chimpanzees. Once you locate them, you will have the opportunity to spend an hour with them.

Afterward, you will return to the starting point to receive your trekking certificate.

Following this incredible experience, you'll be transferred to Rwenzori Mountains National Park in preparation for your hiking and trekking adventure in the Rwenzori Mountains. You'll spend the night at Kilembe backpackers hostel.

Begin your journey at Trekkers, situated at 1,450 meters, and spend the night at Sine Hut at 2,596 meters, resulting in an elevation gain of 1,146 meters. For those in good shape who wish to continue, you can head to Kalalama Camp at 3,134 meters. This route not only offers breathtaking views but also allows for more time at Mutinda Camp, where you can hike up to Mutinda Lookout at 3,975 meters.

The trek starts by ascending the valley floor through the tall trees of the Afro Montane Forest Zone. This steady climb is accompanied by the sounds of numerous birds and the possibility of spotting blue monkeys darting through the foliage. Occasionally, groups of 15 to 20 black and white Colobus monkeys can be seen swinging among the treetops. Rare glimpses of the L’Hoest monkey—an emblem of the Bukonzo culture and protected by the King—may also occur, along with distant calls of wild chimpanzees. The area is rich in diverse plant life, featuring everything from towering forest trees to bamboo thickets, low shrubs, flowers, fungi, and vines draped in moss and lichen that create a stunning visual effect. Just 200 meters from Sine Hut are Enock's Falls, providing a perfect opportunity for a memorable photo.

At Sine Camp, located at 2,596 meters, you'll find wooden huts nestled among tall forest trees on a narrow ridge. Here, you can relax and take in the beauty of the Afro Montane forest while gazing down at a magnificent waterfall cascading over rocks below. Some guests prefer to sit outside by the warmth of the campfire, engaging in conversation with guides about the mountains and local life. Sine is located just below the bamboo zone, and the surrounding area is home to many bird species. Enock Falls, just 150 meters from the camp, is surrounded by vibrant green vegetation and hanging vines—truly a sight to behold.

Trekking begins at 8:30 AM, and you quickly find yourself in the Bamboo-Mimulopsis Zone, where the trail features a steep ascent with numerous high steps. During the wet season, this bamboo area can be muddy and slippery, slowing your progress. Nevertheless, the stunning atmosphere and lush forest make the climb to Kalalama Camp, situated at an altitude of 3,147 meters after ascending 551 meters over a distance of 1.8 km, worthwhile. Here, in the Heather-Rapanea Zone, you can take a break and enjoy a quick cup of tea or coffee before continuing to Mutinda Camp.

The path winds up and over several small hills along a ridge, then descends into the valley before ascending again. Along the way, you will cross several small streams and pass by moss-covered waterfalls. You will then steadily climb alongside a picturesque mossy river that cascades over rocks beneath the Giant Heather trees, whose trunks are draped in green moss and adorned with Usnea lichen hanging from their branches. As you ascend through this deep valley, you'll encounter a remarkable variety of plants and flowers, with many Giant Heather trees creating a beautiful ambiance often enveloped in mist.

In the afternoon, you might choose to hike up to the top of the Mutinda Lookout, which takes about one to two hours to ascend and one hour to descend. The views from the moss-covered rocks at 3,925 meters are breathtaking, offering panoramas of the Rwenzori Mountains as well as sights down to Kasese town and Lake George. For those planning to climb Margherita or any of the main peaks, reaching Mutinda at 3,975 meters is also an excellent way to acclimatize and minimize the risk of altitude sickness. You'll spend the night at Mutinda Camp, located at 3,582 meters.

The path to Bugata Camp can be quite muddy, especially during the rainy season; however, with some careful maneuvering, you can hop from tussock to tussock to make your journey easier.

Initially, you will trek through the Mutinda valley, surrounded by tussock grass and everlasting flowers, dotted with numerous Giant Lobelias.

Afterward, you'll tackle a steep ascent leading to the Namusangi Valley (3,840 meters), where you can admire stunning views of the Mutinda Peaks and cascading waterfalls. The Namusangi Valley is broad and features several ups and downs as the trail gradually rises to Bugata Camp at an altitude of 4,100 meters.

Hike to Hunwick’s Camp via Bamwanjarra Pass. Upon departing Bugata Camp, you will ascend a ridge, then descend slightly before climbing to Bamwanjarra Pass at 4,450 meters, where a hut is available in case of inclement weather. On clear days, the pass offers stunning views of the three main peaks. The trail meanders down the valley, skirting bogs and dense evergreen vegetation, including moss, giant groundsel, and lobelia. This area is likely the best spot in the Rwenzori for observing the Malachite Sunbird, which feeds on the abundant lobelia flowers and is known to breed here.

As you continue, you will encounter some steep sections followed by a gradual ascent over a ridge to Hunwick’s Camp, located atop a deep valley with impressive views of Mt Stanley, Mt Baker, Weismann’s Peak, and McConnell’s Prong.

Starting from Hunwick’s pass, you descend and trek through the valley floor until you reach the breathtaking Lake Kitendara, known for its deep waters and lush vegetation. From this point, you ascend Scott Elliott’s pass and continue up the ridge to Margherita Camp, located at an elevation of 4,485 meters. This camp is nestled among large rocks, providing some protection from the fierce winds. It is also the same location where the Duke of Abruzzi set up camp during his ascent to Margherita Peak in 1906.

Wake up at 2 AM for an early breakfast before setting off to climb Mt. Stanley at 2:30 AM. This early start is essential due to significant weather changes; even during the drier season, heavy clouds and snowfall can close in on the mountain between 1 PM and 4 PM, often occurring within just 10 to 15 minutes as clouds rise from the vast Congo rainforests. In January and February 2017, climbers were trapped and unable to move during intense snowstorms that were unusual for the dry season, with one group returning to Margherita Camp well after dark, exhausted and arriving as late as 11 PM.

Given these weather shifts, there is a strict turnaround time of 10 AM. If you haven't reached the summit by then, you must head back for safety reasons, regardless of any disappointment. The Margherita glacier has also been affected by global warming; as its outer edges recede, the ice becomes steeper, with one section reaching over a 60% grade for about 200 meters. Additionally, much of the underlying ice has melted, creating caves beneath it that could eventually collapse as the glacier thins. Therefore, it's crucial for clients to heed their guides’ advice on safe routes.

For clients with less mountaineering experience, we recommend staying on Stanley Glacier and climbing to a rocky outcrop on the southern edge of Alexandra Peak for stunning views of Congo and the lower mountain ridges.

After reaching the peak at 5,109 meters, you will then descend directly to Hunwick’s Camp at 3,874 meters.

The distance to Kiharo Camp is 11 km, and it takes approximately 4 to 7 hours to walk there.

Begin your day at Hunwick’s Camp by ascending a ridge towards McConnell’s Prong, where you'll enjoy stunning views of all three peaks and Scott Elliott’s Pass before arriving at Oliver’s Pass, which stands at 4,505 meters. The trek from Hunwick’s Camp to the top of Oliver’s Pass covers 3 km. The trail then goes below Weismann’s Peak to where the Nyamwamba River converges, flowing through Kilembe and Kasese before reaching Lake George in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

If you're interested in climbing Weismann's Peak, which is 4,620 meters high from Oliver's Pass, you can do so for an additional fee of $50 per person. On a clear day, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Margherita, Mt Stanley, Mt Speke, and Mt Baker.

After crossing the confluence, the trail winds down the valley to Kiharo Camp, nestled in a deep valley surrounded by towering cliffs and thick vegetation. As you descend the valley, you'll encounter bogs and have to climb over ridges of stones and earth that may seem out of place; these were actually pushed there by slow-moving glaciers that eventually halted, melted, and left behind piles of rocks and debris where the glacier once was.

The distance from Kiharo Camp to the park gate is 16 km, followed by an additional 2.8 km to Trekkers Hostel.

The trail descending through the Nyamwamba Valley is primarily downhill and offers breathtaking scenery, featuring moss-covered rocks by the river, cascading waterfalls, deep valleys, and forests that are among the most beautiful in the Rwenzori Mountains. It took six years to establish a route that is accessible for tourists. In 1937, explorer and geologist McConnell attempted to navigate this valley but was unsuccessful and had to seek an alternative route up the mountain. Today, however, you can explore this stunning valley.

A few kilometers from Kiharo Camp, the path veers right to follow the river. In the open areas, you might spot a Duiker quietly foraging in small clearings along the riverbank. This region likely hosts the highest population of Rwenzori Red Duikers found anywhere in the National Park. A few kilometers downstream, the terrain becomes steeper, showcasing numerous beautiful waterfalls. After passing the waterfalls, we will ascend over a high ridge and then descend through dense forests, offering spectacular views of the valley below.

We will stop at Forest View Camp for lunch before continuing back to Base Camp. This marks a wonderful conclusion to an incredible Rwenzori trekking experience, after which you will be transferred to Queen Elizabeth National Park for an overnight stay at Bush Lodge or a similar accommodation.

After an early breakfast, you'll be transferred to Kasenyi for a game drive. The Kasenyi plains, known for their high concentration of prey, draw in predators, offering opportunities to spot some of the big cats found in Queen Elizabeth National Park during this thrilling adventure.

In the afternoon, enjoy a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, which links Lake Edward and Lake George. This two-hour boat safari will allow you to observe a variety of aquatic, semi-aquatic, terrestrial wildlife, and birds, making it a memorable day in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

You'll spend the night at Bush Lodge or a similar accommodation.

After a leisurely morning breakfast transfer to Bwindi Mgahinga Gorilla National Park a head of Uganda gorilla trekking adventure.

Overnight at Travelers Rest Hotel or similar.

Following an early breakfast, you'll head to the ranger station for a briefing on the guidelines for interacting with gorillas.

Then, accompanied by an experienced ranger guide, you'll trek into the forest to look for the gorillas. Once located, you'll have the opportunity to spend an hour with them.

After this memorable experience, you'll return to the lodge for the night at Travelers Rest Hotel or a similar accommodation.

Following an early breakfast, you'll be transferred to Ntebeko in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for a golden monkey trekking adventure.

After the trekking experience, you'll head to Kigali, Rwanda.

Spend the night at Hotel Des Melli Collines or a comparable accommodation.

Enjoy a relaxed morning breakfast before heading to the Kigali Genocide Museum to honor the victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide against the Tutsi.

Depending on your flight schedule, you will then be transferred to the airport for your departure, concluding your trip.
