High above the Matukituki Valley, where clouds drift like slow rivers between peaks, Whare Kea Chalet rests quietly on the mountainside. At 1750 metres, this alpine retreat feels like a secret world — a place where time slows, snow sparkles, and the vast silence of Mount Aspiring National Park wraps around you.

Your adventure begins with a helicopter flight into the heart of the Southern Alps, landing at the doorstep of a luxury chalet built for comfort and solitude. Spend your days carving fresh tracks through untouched backcountry terrain — steep slopes for thrill-seekers, gentle ridges for those who prefer to take it slow. When the day fades, return to a warm fire, fine meals, and sweeping sunset views over the glaciers.

Here, adventure and comfort meet perfectly. Join us, fly in, unwind, and experience the rare pleasure of wilderness without compromise — the mountains are waiting!

Route details

Day 1
Arrival and First Turns

This is a sample itinerary and can change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances. Please use it as a guide.

Meet your guide at our Wānaka office at 4:00pm the evening before departure. Your guide will review your clothing and equipment to ensure everything is ready for the three-day trip. Rental gear can be issued, and any last-minute purchases made. Plans are finalised for an early start the following morning.

The next morning, meet again at 8:00am at our Wānaka office for a complete gear check. From there, we drive into the beautiful Matukituki Valley and meet our helicopter at Cattle Flat, just beyond Treble Cone Ski Area. After a short scenic flight, we arrive at the luxurious Whare Kea Chalet — your alpine home for the next few days. Settle in, choose your bedroom with a made-up bed, and unpack while enjoying the breathtaking views.

Once everyone is ready, we head out for an introductory ski or snowboard tour near the chalet to warm up and stretch the legs. After lunch, you can relax at the chalet or head out for a few more afternoon runs before returning for après-ski drinks and a delicious dinner prepared by your host. Unwind on the comfortable lounge suites and watch the sun set behind Mount Aspiring.
