At dawn, when the first light touches Milford Sound, Mitre Peak rises like a blade from the water — a perfect reflection of sky and stone. Its steep ridges and deep shadows have watched countless travellers pass below, yet only a few have stood on its summit. This climb is your invitation to step beyond the view and into the heart of Fiordland’s most iconic peak.
The journey begins in Wānaka or Queenstown, winding through Te Anau and the Darran Mountains — a road carved through valleys, waterfalls, and shifting mist. From Milford Sound, a helicopter carries you to the bush edge, where camp awaits beneath towering walls of granite. At sunrise, you’ll climb through tussock and scrub, tackle the Notch — the route’s technical crux — and continue to the Summit Step. Above the “Duck Bill” rock, the world opens wide: the entire length of Milford Sound unfolds beneath your feet.
No crowds, no sound but the wind and the sea below — just the rhythm of your breath and the mountain rising before you. Join us and see what it feels like to meet Mitre Peak not as a postcard, but as a living, breathing giant!
