The Balcony Trail of Susa Valley is one of the most pleasant and varied walking holidays in the Italian Alps.
Recently restored and fully marked by the Piedmont Region and the Italian Alpine Club (CAI), it offers a continuous network of clear, safe trails that connect small mountain hamlets, alpine huts, and scenic lookouts.
Running along the upper slopes of the Susa Valley, the Balcony Trail provides long but gentle stages, following a contour line with minimal steep climbs. Unlike most alpine treks that demand 700-1000 m of ascent per day, this itinerary offers easy walking through forests, pastures, and small alpine lakes, making it suitable for everyone — even beginners and families.
This trail also holds a strong cultural and historical identity. Along the way, we can visit impressive military fortifications such as Exilles Fort and the Sacra di San Michele, as well as smaller alpine chapels and remnants of old border defenses.
The Balcony Trail captures the Dolce Vita of the Italian Alps — walking at a relaxed pace, surrounded by open landscapes, alpine flowers, and the ever-present Chaberton Peak (3100 m) towering on the horizon.
