This 8-day adventure explores the hidden corners of Albania’s Eastern Highlands, following the Albanian section of the legendary High Scardus Trail. Once carved out by Roman caravans in the 2nd century BC, these ancient paths wind through landscapes so vibrant the Romans named the range Scardus, meaning ā€œcolorful.ā€

Traverse breathtaking glacial valleys, wind through alpine meadows, and conquer demanding mountain passes, all while soaking in sweeping panoramas of untouched wilderness. The ultimate reward? Standing atop Mt. Korab (2,764 m)—the highest peak in both Albania and North Macedonia.

Along the way, you’ll experience authentic Balkan hospitality in cozy village homestays, gain a glimpse into traditional highland life, and even spend a rustic night under the stars alongside herdsmen on the remote Grama Alp. The journey ends in the storybook stone villages of Dibra, where local traditions thrive and the days are sweetened by homegrown cherries, apples, and a warming sip of the raki.

Route details

Day 1
Welcome to Albania!

Your adventure begins with a group transfer to Kukƫs, departing no later than 15:00. Join us at 14:00 from Tirana city center or 14:40 from Tirana International Airport (TIA)

Arriving later or coming from a different location? No worries—just contact us to arrange a private transfer, for example from Prishtina Airport, to ensure you reach KukĆ«s by late afternoon, just in time for the tour briefing and welcome dinner.

Please note: Kukƫs is not the return point of the tour, so we recommend storing extra luggage in Tirana or Prishtina before departure.

KukĆ«s, a small border town in northeastern Albania, sits at the scenic confluence of Kosovo’s White Drin and North Macedonia’s Black Drin rivers. In a unique moment of history, the town was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for sheltering over 450,000 Kosovar refugees in 1999.

From here, views of the majestic Mt. Gjallica (2,489 m) offer a breathtaking preview of the landscapes awaiting you.

Tour provider's comments

3/4 ChallengingĀ

6 hikes up to 8h walking time (Ƙ 7:15h) and up to 1,550 m altitude difference.

For treks in mountainous and alpine terrain fitness is important and previous trekking experience recommended. It is not vital as long you are confident of your physical condition and surefootedness. Prepare to endure poor weather and to navigate rocky undefined routes, remoteness can also play a part. Walking days are usually between 5 and 8 hours, although they can be longer to cross passes or peaks (mostly optional). Daily ascents will likely be around 900m to 1.000m, perhaps with the odd day ascending around 1.100m to 1.300m.

The hosts on this relatively new trekking are as authentic as rustic. Between a hotel at start and end, there are welcoming guesthouses (one of our all time favorites!), two nights in a pension as well as a barebones night in shepherd huts. What the summer alp lacks in comfort, it makes up for with a very special experience.
