Route details

Day 1
Welcome to the Balkans – Your Adventure Begins!

Kick off your journey by joining our group transfer from Tirana — either from the city center at 14:00 or TIA Airport by 15:00. By afternoon, you’ll arrive in the vibrant northern town of Shkodra (84 km / approx. 2.5 hrs), where a centrally located hotel awaits.

If time allows, enjoy a visit to the legendary Rozafa Castle, perched above the city with panoramic views — a stunning preview of the Albanian Alps to come. Later, wander through Shkodra’s charming pedestrian zone, flanked by historic bourgeois townhouses. Soak up the Italian flair, browse the lively bazaar, and pick up some local treats like dried fruits and nuts.

After a delicious dinner, we’ll gather to go over the exciting days ahead. If you're in the mood, raise a glass in a cozy local bar — but don’t linger too long, tomorrow's adventure begins before sunrise!

Tour provider's comments

3/4 Challenging

10 hikes up to 8h walking time (Ø 6:45h) and up to 1,300 m altitude difference.

For treks in mountainous and alpine terrain fitness is important and previous trekking experience recommended. It is not vital as long you are confident of your physical condition and surefootedness. Prepare to endure poor weather and to navigate rocky undefined routes, remoteness can also play a part. Walking days are usually between 5 and 8 hours, although they can be longer to cross passes or peaks (mostly optional). Daily ascents will likely be around 900m to 1.000m, perhaps with the odd day ascending around 1.100m to 1.300m.

Framed by a comfortable first and last hotel overnight in private rooms in Shkodra, there's a mix of welcoming guesthouses and huts, especially the rustic stay on the alp of Doberdol.

Hotels with private ensuite rooms and guesthouse with shared rooms - participants share a room with 2-5 other travelers from the group - includes at least one overnight at a basic accommodation

Hotel

Overnights at the city-based hotels are in ensuite single, twin or double rooms. A private room supplement applies to solo travelers and applies for the first and last overnight. Please note that while the adjusted ceiling of four beds per shared room is our goal, it remains to be seen if all hosts can consistently honor this limit during peak season, as the previous standard in 2024 was six beds per room.
